TSMC Arizona Spearheads Next Generation of US Semiconductor Manufacturing with $6.6B Grant

In a defining moment for American technological advancement, TSMC Arizona Corporation has been granted $6.6 billion through the CHIPS and Science Act, accompanied by up to $5 billion in potential loans from the U.S. Department of Commerce. This November 2024 announcement underscores a transformative push to reinvigorate domestic semiconductor production.

The initiative centers on TSMC Arizona’s development of three sophisticated fabrication plants in Phoenix, encompassing a remarkable $65 billion investment. The second facility, targeting a 2028 launch, will implement advanced N3 and N2 processes. The third and newest facility will pioneer A16 chips and even more sophisticated 2nm technology. This technology will be used in devices such as smartphones and data centers, power AI applications, and push the boundaries of high-performance computing applications.

This expansion through TSMC Arizona addresses a critical void in domestic manufacturing prowess. While the United States originated semiconductor technology, its current production represents merely 10% of global output, with no domestic source for cutting-edge chips. The CHIPS and Science Act seeks to reverse this trajectory, having allocated approximately $10 billion across 20 states, with an additional $36 billion proposed to fortify American technological self-sufficiency.

Environmental responsibility is prominently featured in the project’s design, incorporating an industrial water reclamation system to achieve 90% or better recycling across the 1,129-acre development.
